Get Clients - They Key To Business

by Travis Greenlee

One of the most important facets of small business is the ability to get clients. Many people use professional services marketing to do this, but there are many different paths to be able to successfully attract clients.

Quickly getting clients is so important because when starting a new business you have very few clients to begin with. Without these clients your new business will not survive. So your job as an entrepreneur is to acquire new clients. After all, your business exists because of your clients and for your clients.

It is a fact that a business can profit with only a few clients if those clients are catered to. For example, a car parts manufacturer can succeed if they have a contract with just one major car company. However, that's the problem. If for some reason the agreement becomes non-existent or the contract ends, the supplier is going to go out of business because it has no customers.

In order for businesses to have a long lifetime, it is essential that they have a large number of customers. Although there will naturally be a turnover rate among clients, it is generally true that the more clients a small firm have, the longer they will be in business. Client turnover allows the business to continue to operate and to gain new clients.

However there comes a time when a smaller business passes the threshold into a large business. The fact that this is directly contingent upon how much business they are doing and the actual gross receipts that they are producing it is hard to differentiate a business that is small from one that is large.

A lot of people are unaware that the size of a business is determined by the amount of money it takes in and not by the number of clients. Hypothetically, a business could have thousands of clients, but still be categorized as a small business. Conversely, a business could, in theory, have but one client and yet be no longer considered small due to the revenue generated.

There are many ways to successfully attract clients; professional services marketing is only one of these. When you start a small business, your most important job is to get clients, so that your business will survive. If your business is designed to serve few clients, you do not need many clients. But a single-client business will likely fail if it loses its only client. Another reason to have many clients is to ensure that your business will last a long time, as clients come and go through the life of your business. A business is classified as small or large by its gross receipts, not by its number of clients.
